on L(R ) (and its half-line problem, H+, on L2(0,∞) with u(0) = 0 boundary conditions). We will focus on a new approach to the absolutely continuous spectrum σac(h) and, more generally, Σac(h), the essential support of the a.c. part of the spectral measures. What is new in our approach is that it relies on estimates on the transfer matrix, that is, the 2× 2 matrix TE(n,m) which takes (u(m+1) u(m) ) to (u(n+1) u(n) ) for solutions u of hu = Eu (in the continuum case use ( u′(x) u(x) ) instead of ( u(x+1) u(x) ) ). We let TE(n) ≡ TE(n, 0). For example, we will prove the following:

Bounded Eigenfunctions and Absolutely Continuous Spectra for One-dimensional Schrödinger Operators

We provide a short proof of that case of the Gilbert-Pearson theorem that is most often used: That all eigenfunctions bounded implies purely a.c. spectrum. Two appendices illuminate Weidmann's result that potentials of bounded variation have strictly a.c. spectrum on a half-axis. 5

Wkb Asymptotic Behavior of Almost All Generalized Eigenfunctions for One-dimensional Schrödinger Operators with Slowly Decaying Potentials

We prove the WKB asymptotic behavior of solutions of the differential equation −d2u/dx2 + V (x)u = Eu for a.e. E > A where V = V1 + V2, V1 ∈ L(R), and V2 is bounded from above with A = lim supx→∞ V (x), while V ′ 2(x) ∈ L(R), 1 ≤ p < 2. These results imply that Schrödinger operators with such potentials have absolutely continuous spectrum on (A,∞). We also establish WKB asymptotic behavior of s...

The Absolutely Continuous Spectrum of One-dimensional Schrödinger Operators

This paper deals with general structural properties of one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with some absolutely continuous spectrum. The basic result says that the ω limit points of the potential under the shift map are reflectionless on the support of the absolutely continuous part of the spectral measure. This implies an Oracle Theorem for such potentials and DenisovRakhmanov type theorems....

In this paper, we will primarily discuss one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operators (hu)(n) = u(n + 1) + u(n − 1) + V (n)u(n) (1.1D) on ℓ 2 (Z) (and the half-line problem, h + , on ℓ 2 ({n ∈ Z | n > 0}) ≡ ℓ 2 (Z +)) with u(0) = 0 boundary conditions. We will also discuss the continuum analog (Hu)(x) = −u ′′ (x) + V (x)u(x) (1.1C) on L 2 (R) (and its half-line problem, H + , on L 2 (0, ∞) wi...

Trace Formulae and Inverse Spectral Theory for Schrödinger Operators

We extend the well-known trace formula for Hill's equation to general one-dimensional Schrodinger operators. The new function <J , which we introduce, is used to study absolutely continuous spectrum and inverse problems. In this note we will consider one-dimensional Schrodinger operators d2 (IS) H = -j-1 + V(x) onL2(R;dx)
